Your top 5 rose care questions

We get a lot of rose care questions, but here's the top questions we get asked. If you have a burning question about rose care, please get in touch, or sign up to our mailing list for more useful tips and guides.

1. What is Black Spot and what can I do about it?

Black Spot is an airborne fungus that resides in your soil, the best method of prevention is to always clear your rose clippings and leaves from the ground after pruning and treat with a good preventative like sulphur rose. It also helps to feed your roses well over the growing season.

2. When should I prune my roses?

The majority of roses are pruned in early spring, the last week February or first week of March (in the northern hemisphere). However some older once flowering varieties are better pruned in Autumn.

3. When is the best time to plant roses?

It is generally easier to plant roses in the Autumn, bare root and new season. They come out of our ground and into yours in a dormant state and therefore suffer less shock. Although you can plant potted roses whenever you wish, it just may take a little more work in the height of summer, with watering especially.

4. Do I need to feed my roses?

Yes, definitely!  Roses are both thirsty and greedy and a well-fed rose is far less susceptible to disease and will produce bigger, better and more blooms. Use rose food, not general purpose plant food!

5. Can I grow a rose in a pot?

Yes. But do make sure you choose a nice large pot and use a good rich compost (we like John Innes No 3)  Always be good at feeding and watering because your rose relies on you for all its needs.
